Number of Humpback Whales in Brazil Tripled in 10 Years

Rio de Janeiro – The number of humpback whales off the coast of Brazil has tripled in the past decade.

There were nearly 10,000 animals were counted in the region, said the Brazilian Humpback Whale Institute. In 2002, only about 3,000 copies had been sighted in the mating area of the species.

Protection programs have helped stabilize the humpback whales population that was threatened  again, said institute director, Milton Marcondes. With the fat of whales, street lamps were operated. In 1966, the hunting of humpback whales was banned. Back then, there were only an estimated 1,000 animals.

Illegal Sale of Gold in the Amazon Region

Police arrested smugglers of gold in the Brazilian Amazon, that resulted in at least 26 arrests, as reported by local media.Brazilian authorities have seized huge quantities of gold, mining equipment and numerous aircraft.

Due to the wide expanse of the Amazon, it is very difficult to maintain tight control of the area. The area in question, which has suffered a major environmental damage, is located near the border with Venezuela. In particular, detainees are using highly toxic dose of mercury to separate the salinity of the river of gold.

This operation has responded to allegations made by populations of Yanomami Indians, one of the many and varied groups that survive in the Brazilian Amazon.

The Brazilian police has specified that up to five criminal groups were involved in this network of illegal sale of gold that was found a year ago, during which the authorities have been investigating. This network, which were involved from engineers to businessmen, was based in the city of Boa Morte.
